Composing with Nature

Compositions can constantly change with the arrangement and framing of elements.

After viewing the work of Andy Goldsworthy, students were grouped into Element Teams: Earth, Water, Fire, and Air, and given an image of an Andy Goldsworthy sculpture as inspiration to build an ephemeral sculpture. Element teams gathered loose parts from nature to compose their sculptures. After each group completed their compositions, photographs were taken to document their work and the sculptures were returned to nature.

Students then received their photographs the following class and used a viewfinder to find a new composition from the photograph. Students interpreted this new composition with printmaking.
